It would have been tough to top Monument Valley, but the scenery afterwards was pretty spectacular. In fact, one theme you'll see through the subsequent posts is that while things like the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley are well known they are by no means the very best of their type.
This picture illustrates road building 101 - just cut it through the scenery.

This is the approach to the formation and town of Mexican Hat. It is no more than 30 minutes away from Monument Valley and yet the landscape looks completely different.

Here is the hat itself.

As we started to get closer to Moab the scenery changed again. We saw more unusual freestanding structures.


This is Wilson's Arch. It gave us a glimpse of the sorts of things we were going to see in Arches National Park the next day.
